Reflexology

Reflexology apparently grew out of traditional foot massage, which itself arose some 5,000 years ago in the Orient.

In 1913, Dr. William Fitzgerald devised a theory of "zone therapy". He found that by applying pressure to certain points on the hands and feet of his patients he could acheive a partial anaesthesia in the ears, nose and throat. Zones in the body are therefore represented in points in the hands and feet. By carefully applying pressure to these points energy channels and healing resources may be stimulated in the relevant body zone.

For example, the toes relate to the head and neck, the arch of the foot relates to the diaphragm and so on. Thus the simple act of human contact can promote healing and homeostasis.
